About Phambili
An HIV Vaccine Trial

Phambili means "to move forward" in Xhosa. South Africa is moving forward with this first large HIV vaccine study.

Each year, more than 4 million people become infected with the HIV virus. A preventive vaccine against HIV offers the best hope in ending this worldwide epidemic. Phambili is part of an international effort to test and find an HIV vaccine that will work safely for everyone.

Finding a safe and effective HIV vaccine that will protect people is a huge task. We cannot do it without the help of volunteers.

  • Participants in the study CANNOT get HIV from the vaccine.

  • A total of 3,000 people will participate in Phambili.

  • Phambili is being conducted in five sites in South Africa.

Safety is the primary goal of Phambili. More than 2,000 people have received this vaccine in other studies, and those studies have shown that the Phambili vaccine is generally safe. The vaccine does NOT contain the HIV virus, and CANNOT cause HIV infection. We don't know if the vaccine will work to prevent HIV infection, so it is very important for all our volunteers to practice safe sex.
